How much does a Saxophone repair cost?

This is a question we get asked often. With saxophone repairs each instrument is unique and has to be assessed in person for an accurate quote. However with some key information you can get a ball park figure in mind.

  • How old is the saxophone?

Typically, after 3-4 years of regular play the components will start to show signs of wear on the saxophone.

  • When was the saxophone last serviced?

Over time and with exposure to moisture oil can congeal, lacquer and plating can tarnish, and the action can become stiff. Having it seen regularly by a technician can keep on top of issues before they become more serious.

  • What level is it?

Not all saxophones are made equal. If your saxophone costs under £700 it is considered a student model, below £500 - a budget one. The components on these saxophones are not built to last as long as on more advanced models and the metal can often easily be prone to bending.

Sax Repairs FAQs

  • Most issues on a saxophone can be fixed: pads, springs and corks can be replaced, regulation can be adjusted, dents can be taken out and body joint leaks can be filled. Posts can be put back in place and keys can be straightened if bent. It is, however, a question of whether the cost of the repair may not outweigh the value of the instrument.

  • With proper care and regular servicing a saxophone can last almost indefinitely. We've repaired antique saxophones from 1920s which have produced a beautiful sound.

  • Putting the neck in incorrectly can lead to bending and regulations issues. This is something we see on a weekly basis.

When assembling, make sure to to bent the octave mechanism, especially the octave pad on the neck. Use a twisting motion and if it doesn't feel smooth or the neck gets stuck, make an appointment to have it cleaned/re-fitted. We would advise against using vaseline or cork grease.

  • The best way to prevent drops and falls is to keep the saxophone in its case. We recommend to leave it with the case opened after playing so that it can dry out.

Another good solution is to purchase a few other accessories, such as Saxophone Key Leaves or Pad Savers.

Make sure you store your instrument in a place with stable temperature and humidity. A good rule to follow is to store it where you live. Basements, garages, sheds and attics are not suitable for storing musical instruments.
